I was mesmerized in Joann’s world of wolves and I can’t tell you enough how much I enjoyed it!!! Very descriptive and beautifully written, it was poetry in motion. The story was told in different character’s points of view, the good vs evil. The good: Jonah and his friends are typical teenagers and their interactions were believable. I love how they are close and how they are bonded by their loyalty and who they are. The evil: Ralph is the evilest character I’ve read so far in any teen novels. Joann does such a great job that you love to hate him-malicious and vicious. Though I’ve read other books about wolves, this original plot with lots of suspense and the emotional ending, leaves you wanting more. Superb!!! I highly recommend this book to all readers!!!

He was young when he lived there before but now he is in his late teens and returning back thinking he is being punished by his parents. Jonah starts hearing a voice inside his head and thinks he’s going crazy. He stops at a café and discovers there are kids his own age that he knows and that remember him. It’s a relief to him that this may not be a total waste. Then he meets Alaynee, his best friend’s twin sister. It looks to be soul mates for life for those two. He comes to find out he is actually a wolf as well as his friends. This is an experience of a lifetime for him. A crazy man by the name of Ralph believes the town has been invaded by aliens and he must prove to the world that he found them there and should be rewarded for it. He believes the kids are speaking to each other telepathically. Ralph is a guy that had the worst childhood and seems nothing goes right for him. Ralph decides to kidnap Alaynee’s little brother and by his scent, she picks up where he is as she has spent the evening with Jonah. They come to the place where Ralph is holding Alaynee’s brother hostage and is holding a gun. Out of instinct, Jonah changes and bites Ralph. What a big mistake that no one had shared with him. The man is evil and will now change and do evil. His plans are to go back and get his daughter, Cara and eliminate his ex-wife, Jeanne. The council gets together to explain that all of this is not Jonah’s fault as he didn’t know the consequences of his actions, but most importantly, they must now find Ralph, hunt him down and kill him. Will they get there in time to save Cara & Jeanne? This book is hold on cause we are going for a ride. There is so much to love about it and don’t want to give away the entire book. Joann went beyond the call with this book.

I fell in love from the first page. I Am Wolf is a phenomenal debut novel for author Joann Buchanan. The writing in this novel is so well done and it amazes me how she was able to go from a loving light hearted scene to a demonic and dark scene and place the reader in the head of a psychopath. This story will take you through every emotion you can imagine and you will not want to put it down. I Am Wolf ids a page turner to the end. I believe there is something in this book for everyone and Joann must be a magical name, because J.K. Rowling needs to hold on to her throne, before Joann Buchanan kicks her right out of it. Look out Harry Potter, the wolves have descended and are coming for you! 5 Stars all the way!

There were just so many things to love about this book I do not even know where to begin. When I first read the premise, I assumed this was going to be your typical YA were book, which I enjoy. I really felt his journey through guilt, loss, and regret in a very authentic way. *I think one of my favorite things about this book is that, while there were definitely elements of the supernatural, the real terror and evil was human. To me that made it much more suspenseful and at times, frightening. There is one character that does not actually exist and even though I knew from the paragraph she was introduced that she was not actually there, she was terrifying. *Underlying everything, was the love and bond of family. *I am just going to say it and it will mean a slight spoiler, but I am glad there was no sex in this YA read. I think that the main story arc was so deep and heavy that if sex were added to the mix, I would not have felt comfortable recommending it to the intended audience. There was so much going on that it simply was not needed and it would have probably been "too much". *I could not put this book down. Once I was immersed in the main story arc, I had to know what was going to happen next and was pleasantly surprised that many of my guesses were wrong. I really, truly hope there are more books coming out in this series. I will definitely be keeping my eyes out for more books by this author.

I was sent “I Am Wolf” for review. I really enjoyed that this was from a male perspective but it also gave me perspectives of other characters as well. The Native American legend Joann created was very enjoyable. In the beginning I judged it as another werewolf YA love story but the further I read the darker this story became and it kept me reading. Although the story is mainly about Jonah and Alaynee, I enjoyed Ollie and Dakota’s romance even more. It was quiet but I could feel the chemistry between them. Jonah is a great character. He’s headstrong and has a good heart. He goes through a lot and his doubts and fears made him likable. I felt Alaynee was just too perfect and even though she’s a sweet girl I didn’t really care for her. One thing I did like about Alaynee and Jonah was that they were ‘it’ for each other. There wasn’t a typical overly-done teenage love triangle in the story. All the teens were portrayed very maturely as well which made the story more enjoyable. Ralph’s character adds a dark twist to the story that I wasn’t expecting. Joann’s writing is very visual and some of the sequences were ick inducing. As demented as Ralph becomes it kept me reading. Beyond all the gore is Cara’s beautifully, imaginative, innocent storyline that connects the characters together. There are a lot of elements to this story and Joann adds her own style of philosophies to the mix which got me thinking. The beginning confused me. I was reading the dedication and it blended with the start of the story so I had to reread it to figure out what was going on. There were also a few times Joann’s poeticism was lost on me. I’m also confused why the series is titled ‘The Children of Nox’ instead of Tibolt. I give “I Am Wolf” 4/5 stars. It started off slow but evolved into an attention stealing story. My big hope is that the next book doesn’t contain a love triangle to sour my enjoyment.

The undertones of family, loyalty, friendship, respect and responsibility are front and center, and will ring true for not only YA readers, but adults as well. Joann cleverly exposes the reader to the consequences of not controlling the animal inside and what happens in the blink of an eye when the raging monster, even if for the purest of reasons, is let out. I highly recommend this thrill a minute book to YA and above!

5stars ***** Wow! Talk about letting a horror story wrap you up in a scary blanket!! I loved IAMWOLF!!! The market has been saturated by YA Paranormal lately, but THIS is a must read~ I love horror stories, but if the author can't begin to paint the picture that my imagination will grab, I put it down. Little does he know, the move is actually part of a grand plan. Jonah has been born into a clan of Native Americans who have been given a sacred duty by the Great Spirit. Jonah makes friends with local boys Daniel, Dakota and Utah, and the dialogue going back and forth between these guys is just priceless. The banter, the insults, the shoving and fighting, and ultimately the bond of friendship is in fact more like what you see between blood brothers—or a wolf pack—and these are so well done in this book. The author, Joann Buchanan, makes it look easy. I marvelled at the way my emotional investment in Jonah and the other characters ramped up as the book moved along. Surprises abound in I Am Wolf. Moonshine-brewing, putrid-smelling Ralph, who lives outside of town in a shack and becomes fixated on killing the white wolf he has seen, provides no end of surprises. Ralph’s confrontation with Jonah and his gang goes from resembling one of those hillbilly feuds to something much more profound. In the meantime we meet Ralph’s special friend, Gracie. The dialogues between these two had me in stitches laughing, and at the same time shaking my head in wonder. You’ll see what I mean. Then there’s the way Ralph always refers to his ex as „ball-and-shackles“ and his abandoned daughter as „flesh-of-my-flesh“—when you’re not bursting out laughing, it literally makes your skin crawl. Friends, this is not merely good writing; this is more than just a lucky riff. I Am Wolf is a masterpiece of YA fantasy—self-assured, wildly imaginative, at times hilarious, also terrifying. The earth balance is described in I Am Wolf in a hundred different ways, and there is philosophy here. Can the power of love counteract the horror in the world? What is the meaning of time? Where do we really go in our dreams? I don’t know of any questions more relevant than these, in the messed-up world we have made for ourselves today. Think about the recent massacres in a Colorado movie theater and in Wisconsin. If such questions interest you, read I Am Wolf. The horror elements in I Am Wolf are absolutely on a par with the best Stephen King novels, such as The Stand, or Desperation, or Insomnia, some of my own favorites. But there is so much more to I Am Wolf! The characters are so much more than real. I LOVE Jonah and Alaynee and Jeanne and Cara, just as if they were real people. Ralph is a creation that ranks up there with any first-rate villain in recent memory. The undercurrent of Native American beliefs and descriptions of their rituals are a thing of beauty and are essential to these characters and their story. I Am Wolf is a stunning achievement, worthy of a place on bookshelves everywhere. Moving, awe-inspiring, thought-provoking, this book is truly extraordinary.

After reading Joann H. Buchannan’s first novella, Soulless Light, I was anxious to read I Am Wolf. I Am Wolf is such a unique book that it could be marketed for Young Adult or even Adult, and almost needs its own category as a Paranormal Fantasy Horror Novel. Magic, it has it. Werewolves, it has that too. Horror, oh yeah, there is definitely blood and gore in this book enough to make any head bashing, limb decapitating monster happy. If you love all of these things, then you will love I Am Wolf. After reading Joann H. Buchannan’s first novella, Soulless Light, I was anxious to read I Am Wolf. If you love all of these things, then you will love I Am Wolf. While the characters in this book are high school students, anyone can relate to the tales of Jonah and his youngling pack. Jonah is a typical teenager filled with angst and when he is sent to live with his grandparents in Sisters, he is in for the surprise of his life. He soon learns that the wildness he had been feeling inside is something much more deeper than normal teenage hormonal issues. He and his friends are actually part of a youngling pack of werewolves who have a keen sense of comraderie that serves well to help them become a close-knit pack. When a crazy, well there are probable better words for Ralph, like lunatic, deranged, homicidal, when this foe wants to hunt down the white wolf he becomes even more fixated on learning the secrets of Sisters. To protect his first love, Alaynee and her brother, Squeaks, Jonah attacks Ralph creating an Unnatural beast that no longer sees the line between right and wrong. Ralph goes on a killing spree that would make your regular mask murderers stand back in awe. I don’t want to give away the rest of the book, for there are quite a few twists and turns that make this book so unique. The Native American lore and poetic beauty of the writing make this book stand out among many that I have read. Since this book has been marketed first for the young adult audience I was quite pleased to find that Ms. Buchannan does not feel the need to make her book any less mature, that she did not have to dumb it down for her audience. I greatly appreciated this for it is the kind of book I hope my daughter wants to read someday. We should inspire our children to be better, and introducing them to novels that improve their vocabulary, give them a greater appreciation for the poetic nature of the written word. and perhaps even just give them a place to escape to that does not feel sparkly is nice now and then is extremely important. I definitely recommend this book to the young adult and to the adult that wants to go down memory lane and remember how they felt when they were driving their first car, going to their school football games, and falling in love for the first time.

Rating it 3.5 I am going to start by saying that this book has way too many POV. Don't get me wrong, I love reading characters different POV throughout the story, but in this case it was just unnecessary to have about six or more POV. Now, the story for me was not fast paced and it did get boring at times of hearing the same thing over and over again. There was not a lot of romance in the story, because it was basically more about being part of the Pack. Although, there were a lot of creepy, sinister, graphic scenes/dialogue from the bad guys POV. But there were a lot of great quotes that I got from this book, which I usually don't get from other books. I guess that a lot of people can relate to some of the situations the characters go through. Overall, I would have to say that this was a pretty good read. Although, I wish that it did not have so many POV's. Quotes (I loved a lot from this book): Kindle Version "At what point does reality imitate what we see in our dreams?"- 602 "We barely know who we are and yet we are forever searching for the answers to the most basic of questions." -608 "Words are a waste of time. Actions are what count."- 1133 "When everything in life is made to be broken----promises, dreams and hearts, all of them--it's the memories of perfect moments that get us through."-1895 "Life can catch you off guard. It smacks you in the face when you least expect it. There is nothing that you can do but accept what has been given to you and work with what you have." -3306 "The truth is that not story or life lived goes on without the experiences changing you. For better or worse, life does that. The events that take place make you who you are. Sometimes they take more than you have to give." -5071 "Moms are irreplaceable . They give you life and shape all you become. They are always there to listen and love you even when you're wrong." -5147 "It is what it is...life. It goes on when we don't want it to. It moves forward when all you want to do is stand still or turn back." -5167 "Time doesn't heal the wounds; it masks them. It takes them and makes them something else. Some scars always remain. Some wounds always remain open and exposed." -5175

Buchanan did a great job in passing that critical stage of the first book of a series. I liked this book a lot. It's a bit different from my normal reads because the romance is not the highlight of the book. It's different but mostly welcome. This is a gripping tale of a boy who wasn't ready for the changes that has entered in his life. The author did a great job on conveying the different emotions of Jonah, his confusion, anger, guilt, his love for Alaynee and his protectiveness for his family and for Cara. I also liked how the author painted a picture inside my head as I read. It made me feel like I was really there. Ms. Joann H. Buchanan has a knack for using descriptive words that has that power to take you inside that book. It was really awesome. The author used different points of views in this book. It was nice to know how the other characters think and feel. I think it was nice to get to know the other characters besides the protagonist. It makes it more exciting. This book will take you to a very unique ride. This book will make you feel a myriad of emotions that would take you to the highest and lowest. Ms. Joann H. Buchanan is one author to watch out for. A book lover wouldn't want to miss a great book from a great author. This review is originally posted on my blog Journey with Books

I stayed up all hours and fell in love with the way the ‘pack’ was able to communicate. I really cannot wait until I’m able to read through the amazing sequel, The Kiss to find out what happens to Cara and Jonah, and just how deep the love is between Jonah and his soulmate, Alaynee. All in all this is a riveting read, absolutely engrossing. I adored this book and will continue to support the author in ALL her works. I Am Wolf is an amazing book which reminds me a lot of works by Gena Showalter and other such amazing authors.

I completely fell in love with this book!I am so glad I got it. Joann Buchanan knows how to put a story together and then throw her reader right in the thick of things. The action started immediately and keeps going til the end of the book. She was so descriptive that I could see everything in my mind as if I were there. The characters are written so clearly and with such obvious care, that I was surprised when they didn't morph into real people and sit in my living room while I read. I loved this book. I loved the fact the author let you in on different POV's so you knew what every character was thinking or going through. You felt every emotion that each character felt. The author did a great job describing every detail as if you were actually there. The drama, the action, the love and betrayal made this story. I had to savor the ending because I didn't want it to end and the ending it self just makes you want to scream BOOK 2 PLEASE!!! Read it you won't be disappointed. I f I loved this book. 3.5 Overall an enjoyable read. the frequent philosophical tangents were at times very thought provoking and interesting and at other times annoying and detracting from the story. Alaynee is a little too good to be true and her character is a bit boring but the rest of the characters are very interesting and believable. i really enjoyed getting to know the rest of the gang and look forward to reading about them in the next book.

Wow, What a ride!Talk about a fly by the sear of your pants page turner. Not my usual genre of choice, but I couldn't put it down! Showed, in a lot of whats, that good versus evil isn't always clean cut. Really explored the grey area in between.Anxiously awaiting the next book...For that matter, can't wait to read ANYTHING by this woman. She could make a recipe book seem enthralling.

I absolutely loved this book! The character Jonah was my type of hero. Alaynee was beautiful and made me just want to be her. The little girl Cara was so loving and innocent. Ralph was a terrifying villain. I cringed with every description. I loved this book and look forward to reading more books by this author. Well done Joann!

This book starts out slow, but it really picks up. I enjoyed the way the writer allowed the characters to provide their own point of view of the story as it unfolded. It allowed you to get a better understanding of the story and how it affected everyone involved. I am getting ready to start the next book in the series, and I can't wait to see how the story unfolds.

I liked the story very much. It was well written and kept you wanting to find out how the story ends. There were one or two little scenes/words that I thought weren't necessary to include. But over all it was a good book.
