I was hoping for a formula, tricks and tips but I got a heavy dose of real life with this book. The first couple of chapters set the stage, we as parents are raising children in complicated times with lots of societal pressure and we need to carefully navigate sheltering our kids BUT not raising them to be naive. In addition to this, John MacArthur points out that not only are there external forces, but internal battles of sinful nature that we need to be aware of... What I got out of this book. Teach your child about God. Teach them to love God. Teach them to obey God from their heart. Lead by example. One other main idea I learned: kids grow in 4 ways, wisdom, physical stature, social skills and spiritually. Everything that John MacArthur talks about and highlights he gives Biblical scripture as evidence of the needs and to support his stance. There were a couple moments I sort of hesitated and paused because he has a hard stance on ADHD, feminism and the role of mothers but that will be topics for another time if I ever do a book study on this.

En fin en mi humilde opinión,. Da buenos consejos al principio pero cuando ya entra en el tema del rol del hombre y la mujer ya no me pareció bien su opinión al respecto

I know this book is one I will reference again and again. Is it repetitive? Yes, but that happens to be how we learn and internalize truth. We constantly need to be reminded of God's model for family because it's counter cultural. This isn't formulaic, although it does have some"do's and don'ts," it isn't a recipe. It does however give you the foundation upon which to build your family, and principles to put into practice. It is practical, simple and Biblical. If you read the book only for the compilation of scripture within, you'd still come away edified, but his exposition is thoroughly practical helpful and leaves one better understanding Biblical family structure.

Biblically solid. Outdated in some statistics and information but well worth the money since it deals with what Scripture teaches about the family. It isn't a trendy book on parenting or a book of ideas “how to”. This is a good start for someone who needs the biblical foundation of parenting.

Muchas enseñanzas Bíblicas sólidas. Muy “tradicional” en sus enseñanzas acerca del daño que hacemos a la familia las mujeres profesionales.

This was the first "christian parenting" book that I read years ago. It is very much like Shepherding a Child's Heart, with slightly less emphasis on the heart and minus colorful anecdotes of Tripp (e.g. the new shoe fiasco). Hopefully, in saying that, it doesn't diminish the value of this book.

Very good book. In classic John MacArthur style you get solid Biblical teaching on the subject of child rearing and structure in the home. This is written to mothers and fathers alike.

Classic MacArthur book on parenting. Great mix of theological and practical.

Great book. Unlike others that only focus on discipline, I liked how much time McArthur spent on the role of each parent and also their role as husbands and wives.

Packed with wisdom, although it's in his typical confrontational style ;) Gotta love John MacArthur! That man loves God's word and works hard at accurate application.
