IDW have gone about the potentially godawful enterprise of adapting Angry Birds the game into a comic by hiring two excellent writers, Jeff Parker (Batman ’66) and Paul Tobin (Bandette), both of whom have created some wonderful all-ages comics (particularly Tobin’s Marvel Heroes work). Together they craft some short and simple stories for the Angry Birds to have while the Pigs try to steal their eggs. An elaborate theme park, Piggyland, keeps the Birds occupied while the Pigs raid their nests; candy and cartoons attempt to subvert the Birds’ friendships; a weather machine takes on the Birds; and fashion grips the Pigs as the search for the best wig is on! These are comics aimed at younger readers AND it’s based on a video game so expect the most straightforward, uncomplicated stories with the simplest characterisations. They’re very broad comics that I’m sure the target audience of kids will like – older readers though? Ehhhhhh, no! That said, I read this out of curiosity to see how exactly Angry Birds becomes a comic at all, given that there’s absolutely no narrative in the game, and I think Parker and Tobin did a fine job building what they did out of what little they had. And it’s certainly more readable than Tobin’s other game-related comic, the coma-inducing Plants Vs Zombies: Lawnmageddon. Is it an amazing comic? No, it’s Angry Birds, it was never going to be amazing! But it’s also not terrible either and fans of the game, especially younger readers, will find an ok collection of short comics in this volume.

I received an ARC copy for review. My 7 year-old son LOVED this comic. We read it in one sitting, taking turns reading aloud with all the fun onomatopoeias! There were several short stories in similar fashion to the Angry Bird Cartoons. My son is definitely a fan of the Angry Bird Comics now, and can't wait for more!

I used to be obsessed with the game when it first came out, of course. Way back when it was a cell phone game and there was only one version and I sucked at it. I was ambivalent about the movie but wanted to give the comics a try because they seemed cute and I love the yellow triangle bird. Amusing enough to read to the end, but definitely more for kids with how silly it is. Not quite interesting enough for me to keep reading. NTS: Not reading Vol 2

I'm not a fan of Angry Birds but I figured I'd give this book a try. It was cute. I really enjoyed the illustrations but this book couldn't convince me to become a fan.

My right hand man, also known as my 9 year old son Drew, said, "OH COOL". Yes that is a good first reaction. Drew continued to read the book, laugh out loud often, and then request a printed copy for later rereading. What great feedback. I thought the funny looking birds and pigs were very humorous. I thought the comic wonderfully written and drawn. It was appropriate to it's target audience (big kids / adults) and will provide hours of entertainment. I remain in awe at the marketing behind this whole product, or was it just an accident that these birds and pigs be came so famous?? 'Angry Birds Comics Volume 1: Welcome to the Flock' proved two things to me. First, you can make a decent comic out of characters from an app, and second, that Paul Tobin can write anything, and he does it well. The birds are trying to protect their eggs. The pigs are trying to steal the eggs. The birds fly over to the pigs village to keep the pigs from having time to steal the eggs. That's pretty much the premise of the game. The pigs are pretty dumb, but some of the birds are too. When Bomb Bird gets the hiccups, he keeps blowing up anything around himself. Another story has the pigs trying to brainwash the birds with candy and propaganda to make them doubt each other. My favorite might have been the pigs building a theme park that had a lot in common with a certain California based theme park. There are other stories. There is even, I think, a flip comic that runs along the bottom pages of the book, but in a review electronic copy, it's a bit hard to flip the pages fast enough. It's all perfectly great fun for kids, which is great, since I learned how to play the game from my, then, 4 year old niece. Rather than being one-note like the game, it felt more like the old Coyote/Roadrunner cartoons. I hope there are more. This was fun. I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, IDW Publishing and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this fun graphic novel.

***Thanks to Netgalley and to the publisher for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

My original expectations for this weren't very high but it far surpassed this and was really quite enjoyable! With the bomb bird who has an unfortunate case of the hiccups and can't stop exploding to the adventure world of Piggyland which is another cunning ploy for the pigs to steal the Angry Birds' eggs. It's an entertaining quick read which will be enjoyed by fans of the game, in particular this will appeal to young boys who will enjoy reading these though girls will probably do so too! I found this comic more entertaining than the game by far, they're short, simple, funny and to the point which is all the essential components of a good children's comic. The illustrations are brilliant and really brought this to life. A nice short collection, which will entertain and amuse, but it isn't a comic that I think that children will really want to revisit more than a couple of times....

Strictly for the very young, it has the silliness inherent in the game's set-up, and a decent spread of different short stories to act as some people's first comic book. But speaking of inherent silliness – that's what one would show if one expected much more than that.

    1. Bomb can't get rid of his hiccups. 2. The pigs drop "ProPIGanda" in the form of candy and literature that might just turn the birds against each other. 3. The Pigs try to use a egg sucking device, but the birds outsmart them. 4. The pigs open Pigglyland A series of story lines pitting the birds against the pigs. Should be popular with students, though the stories aren't that interesting.

Angry Birds continue their takeover of the world by invading comic-book land. These are very short tales the birds and pigs interactions with jokes, slap-stick and even a bit of espionage thrown in. Not bad for quick, semi-mindless reading.

These Angry Bird comics are hilarious, even if you aren't a fan of the game. The pigs and birds all have their own unique personalities that when all are combined have some ridiculous outcomes. The book is made up of several short comics varying in length from one page to ten. Fabulous fun for all!
