Candy Pizza, the debut poetry collection by Charlotte Cuevas, is a funky-fresh celebration of growing up on your own terms. At once brimming with the bitter humor of an adult and the vulnerable honesty of a child, it's everything you wish you could've read when you were growing up: advice on how to not be stupid, when to use swear words, how to deal with mood swings, how t Candy Pizza, the debut poetry collection by Charlotte Cuevas, is a funky-fresh celebration of growing up on your own terms. After having religiously followed Charlotte Cuevas's delicious poetry blog (365 Poetry Project), I was expecting a bit more than what Candy Pizza has to offer. But then again I can't blame the book for the baggage of expectations that I had been carrying around while I started reading this petite collection. But then again I can't blame the book for the baggage of expectations that I had been carrying around while I started reading this petite collection. Having said that, Candy Pizza has some beautiful naturally flowing verses. One of the poem starts "Whatever you do in this world, you don't stop singing..." The rhythmic subtlety with which the poet induces these little but dense feelings akin to celebration of life in the reader is noteworthy. One of the most restrained poems from this collection "Two Strangers" portrays in a simple way how sometimes people have no choice but to go their own ways after having shared a few warm moments. Some of the poems that touched me deeply are Sunflowers, Two Strangers, The Victorious Song, Jumping Puddles, Getting over it, A Thousand Lives A good start but I as many other readers know that Charlotte Cuevas can bake a better slice of wood-fired Poetry.

Poetry that's fun and healthy, indeed! Cuevas captured my attention from the introductory lines, "Candy pizza is disgusting, let me just tell you that right off," to the last words, "There are things which cannot be written." 'Candy Pizza' is a great collection of poetry: relatable, and easy to read and process. Cuevas' voice is consistent throughout the anthology, but her poems vary in form, so there's never a boring moment. I look forward to reading more of Cuevas' work in the future.

Candy Pizza's poetry is a mixed bag of goodies! It has poetry for the deep thinkers, the comedy lovers, the life explorers, and pretty much everything in between! Check it out and don't forget to check out the bloggers blog either!
