Struggle for what you want. Never take no for an answer. Don't give up on yourself. This whole memoir was fantastic. I didn't know a lot about James Prince other than the fact that he's an OG, top dog in the music and boxing industry - but I learned a lot about him and it was enlightening. Ironically, he reminds me a lot of my dad; wise words and so much heart. I found this whole book incredibly inspiring and true af. Ironically, he reminds me a lot of my dad; wise words and so much heart. I found this whole book incredibly inspiring and true af. If you want respect you have to go out there and work for it, you have to earn it and you have to treat people with the same level of respect they treat you with. That's how you build good relationships. That's how you build a good business. James Prince had an incredibly good personal story as well; what a time - to grow up for so many years and be misled about your own father until one day you're like dude, why do all these other people look like me at a family function, in your teenage years. It's wild. There's so much importance behind knowing yourself and where you came from and the kind of stock you're made up of. You can tell that James Prince is a legendary wild card too. I don't know if I really believed the whole "I travelled with my pastor to meet with people" rhetoric etc.. dude! is "pastor" code switching for "he rolls with god, but will still set if off" because it sure sounds like it! I respect that he never took the constant attack from the DEA laying down. Sometimes even if it seems like something is too big to challenge, you still have to challenge it. Especially for the good of all people like you, doing what you're doing, from your area. It shows them that they don't have to take it. Which is critical and can mean life or death. Fight for your life and freedom by any means necessary. James Prince ain't Malcolm, but that's some Malcolm shit - and even Malcolm wasn't MALCOLM when he first started out. All in all - this was a 5-star memoir by one of rap's legendary influencers and sponsors of the culture. I liked the intro by Drake - it was a nice touch and just set the tone for the young folks who may not have lived the struggles that James Prince has talked about but likes to act like they have. Every word here felt authentic. Struggle for what you want. Never take no for an answer. Don't give up on yourself. felt like the major takeaways. I respect that.

Solid book! This book felt more like a collection of anecdotes that centered on finding respect in different spaces, than a memoir. Loved hearing his story, regardless.

Living in Houston, you tend to hear a lot about the guys who really set the city on fire over the years. J Prince is without a doubt one of those guys they talk about even far beyond his prime. I've never gotten the chance to meet him face to face but I have shared the same space as one of his heirs in Houston and you can tell he lives by every word he preaches. His sons' hustle is reflective of that as well. He's a genius in many ways and continues to pay it forward spiritually, mentally, physically and even sometimes emotionally. This book is living proof that he's been doing it "for the culture" as many seem to preach about nowadays. A true mastermind and businessman who got it "out the mud". Love reading bios like these because you dive into the reasons why everyone ever fell in love with people like J Prince and the Prince heirs. Houston's rap scene wouldn't be the same without J and he knows that and shows it in every word in this book. His expertise extends far beyond what this book covers, touching the lives and careers of some of the industry's most prominent names, such as Drake. Drake shows that gratitude every chance he gets. This work inspired me to read more works surrounding today's rappers and entertainers. Someday we'll meet on a literary note, but until then...keep the hustle alive King!

The Art and Science of Respect is part critical memoir, part hip hop history lesson, and all life lessons that benefit every reader. The book begins with a traumatic event that makes you want to journey with James to see how he is able to use some of his experiences growing up in poverty and amidst violence, to make his mark on the world. A great book that can help someone rediscover the habit of reading. Plus there are a few moments when my mouth dropped open and I looked around for someone to talk about this book with!

I’m from Houston and I grew up in the neighborhood adjacent to the 5th Ward (Trinity Garden). J. Prince is a few years older than me so of course we all heard the rumors and street fables of what he was up to throughout the years. When you changing your life and the lives of others it gets ugly and savage. J don’t hide any of that in this book. Nice work Prince and Mrs. Waters.

I learned alot! I purchased this book for my son so that he could read it on the Kindle Fire I gave him. My son requested this book. I read the first page by error and could not and did not put it down until I completed it. Did I say I'm 65 years old and never have been that interested in most rap. I do have some idea of who a few of these people were in the book because of my children, nieces, nephews and the media. J. Prince was not one of those that I knew. I do Now! My son could not believe I read this book. I'm so glad I did!!

Give this man his respect nahmean Damn J.Prince is that dude this dude and the notorious stories about him ALWAYS fascinated me. Old school player with that LONNNNNNNGGGGGG money.... He really put his thoughts out with this one. His trials and his INSPIRING triumphs. Yeah he's not to be f*cked with but also he has a good heart who helps out his own I wouldn't mind having him as my mentor. It's sad how people tried to get over on him and force his hand.... This book was great. This has been by far the most inspiring bio of a black entrepreneur that I’ve ever read. For alot of people who grow up in poverty it's a daily wish to achieve and experience a better life. J. I was afraid to open up to the first page based off of stories I’ve previously heard about him BUT... I enjoyed reading more about him and grew to appreciate the book. As real as it gets I love the fact that this book is not a series of boastful anecdotes, but a true breakdown of the trials and tribulations on the road to success. Furthermore, the fact that J. Being a fifth ward native,I was already familiar with the Legend that is J. Prince. But actually listening to the audiobook and gaining so much knowledge gave me a brand new respect for him. Don’t get me wrong the respect has always been there but I am now at an age where I can appreciate the knowledge he is sharing. And hearing it in his own voice makes it that more special. If you want to learn some great life lessons or just the art and science of respect in general, this is a definite must read. He definitely opened up about the struggles in the urban community. It was very empowering to see how a young, black man comes up and never takes no for an answer. Reading this book came at a pivotal point for me being that I am young and still finding myself. I have so many ideas that float in my head and I always doubt that they'll get anywhere but my head. Great and inspiring book I grew up in poverty in the hood just like j prince but not in Houston instead Miami but regardless of what city in America you are from poverty is just poverty, it sucks and it is truly depressing ! And to see how he made it out and never forget those still struggling and gave back too many from his neighborhood a second chance at life should be an inspiration for many others.

Decent I gave this book 3 out 5 stars because in my opinion it wasn't a true biography. It was more like a book filled with major key stories from his life. One minute he's 34 the next he's 11 the next he's 23. It was more business than personal. And I expect more personal in a biography. I will say his faith carried him through and helped him in a lot of business situations. Because he honestly doesn't seem like a good business man. People just fear him.

Succinct and to the point with many of his examples. He didn't delve too deep into some for obvious reasons but his points were made quickly enough to reveal his strategy and outcome. I really would give it a 4.5. It was a very light read and enjoyable throughout because of the number of significant figures involved in his life but I won't share which so it's a surprise but it was nice going to youtube to confirm them irl

a good read about how a man uses his resources and skills to better not only his life but the lives of his friends and family. He teaches applicable business practices to ensure that everyone who reads his book leaves inspired and able to attain the same success. It's also a good look into how Hip Hop was changed by the movement in the South. James Prince is a legend and OG for a reason.

Absolutely amazing.... A true testament of how faith, love, loyalty and respect would put you in a position to achieve things beyond your wildest dreams. This book was the missing ingredients for me to step up and lead my immediate family with the objective to bring us all back together again. I recommend this book to those who have the same ambition. Thanks Mr. Prince!

This was an interesting read. Understanding what brought success for J Prince was worth the book, even though parts come across as disjointed or a little defensive. In particular, his stories about embracing family and being determined to be successful are most interesting. Stay with it for the to-do lists at the back, it's clear Prince was focused on making himself a success.

The book was enlightening and inspiring. At times the stories didn't feel chronological but it was amazing to get a glimpse into how James Prince became James Prince. The book felt personal at times and he had some great stories on Pimp C, Floyd Mayweather, Larry Hoover, Master P etc. I completely agree with his idea of respect.
