I’m so sad that I’ve already read all four of these! I should have stretched them out and savoured them but they were just so damn good that I couldn’t help but binge read all of them in one sitting. No matter what form she’s writing whether graphic novel, young adult, middle grade or adult, Schwab knows how to write one hell of a captivating story that you can’t help but fall in love with! And there you have it. End of a villain we had heard such terrifying things about. And she didn't even get to do any of her fancy, horrible Bone Magic stuff. This sucks! P.S. I read these comics here:

I had no intention of reading these graphic novels but revisiting the story rekindled my interest. The audiobooks are incredible, by the way. I enjoyed Maxim and Amirah's perspectives in the Conjuring of Light and while I dislike reading prequels whose characters will eventually die, I'm liking Maxim's story. There's an actual history there instead of one being made on the spot for the sake of these graphic novels, that much I could tell from reading the third Shades of Magic book. Also, because it's such a marvelous series that appeals to the imagination, I think the graphic novels were a great idea. The art at the very beginning depicting the closing of doors between worlds is my favorite so far. Though, I would love to read about the Londons pre-closing and how that happened. That would be an ominous story.

Okay this may sound weird but I don't really seem to that fond of these graphic novels, and that might be because I cannot bring myself to care that much for any of these characters or the plot. It just doesn't click with me. That could be because these graphic novels are immensely short and they're over in a flash. I just don't like Maxim that much. Still I will continue with this because I want to see what happens next and if I can like the next novels more. Twitter | Instagram | Youtube | Last. I LOVE this. When I first started these graphic novels, I said that they would help me determine if I love or hate king Maxim. While I'm still not sure how I feel about King Maxim, I am now certain that I absolutely adore Prince Maxim. I'm really enjoying this part of his story, the friendship, the personal growth and the adventures are so gripping, so well written and the art is so well done! I need more!

Finally stakes get a bit higher as characters play dirty. I enjoyed this issue the best, I believe, since it was hard to foresee what the outcome was going to be.

The artwork was very dark compared to the other issues that came before, but it sets the the tone for the climatic ending for the Pirate Queen. I seriously LOVED this comic!! I'm not sure if there will another issue or some of form of continuation but I'm ready for whatever comes next. I'm seriously hooked on these! Volume 4 is my favorite so far!

I like how it ended. Definitely ready to see more of Maxim and the people who are supporting him. The next one, Night of Knives, sounds so good! This one was a good lead up to the next novel and it was a good read.

The build up was excellent in the last issues. The ending was great just wish there was a little more pizzazz. But then I am spoiled by Schwab's genius... So...

Much better towards the end but this was way too fast. I know comics are not the same as a novel but this was too quick and too convenient. As much as I wanted to know more about a young Maxim, I don't know if I'll be continuing these.

Nice wrap up of the first arc, in a series obsessed with royals and pirates. This was basically the big battle and I hope that in the next arc we get more character building...

Kind of confusing at first. I breezed through them in under an hour. I'm not used to reading comics, but I feel like depth was missing in these comics. Some scenes jumped back and forth several times with out indication and it was hard to follow in that regard. I had expected more from this first installment. I want to know more about Maxim and what made Schwab want to tell his story. I hoping the next installment we'll get more of that. If this were a full length graphic novel there'd probably be more time to develop these characters.  Very curious to see what arc 2 will bring. Overall, I'm not a big fan so far. 3/5

I’m really torn about this, the story was ok, but didn’t blow me alway like I thought it would. I understand that they only have so many pages per issue, but I felt like this needed to be longer then a 4 issue story arc as it felt rushed at times and I still after reading it don’t know much about ‘Maxim’ as a character. I get they might do more with the character in future story arcs, but as a stand-alone comic series I didn’t give me the excitement when reading the shade of magic series. Of course, I love the Shades of Magic series, its one of my favorites, so I jumped at the chance to read King Maxim's origin story. I think the whole retro graphic novel feel fell flat for me. I would love to see a different art style for the next issues. Overall the story was cool, but it was so dark it was hard to follow at some points. It was very cool to see the other covers and the authors notes in the back.

(I forgot to post this review after I finished it) -- This was brilliant!! This one had even more action than the previous 3 and we got to see even more of the Red London magic in the artwork!!😄😄 The ending wasn't what I was expecting, but I really enjoyed it! I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHERE THE NEXT VOLUMES GO!!!!😄😄😄😄

A rather quick wrap up of that story, with a high death toll. Still makes me want to reread the original series though! One issue - it was difficult to keep the characters apart again, and from fighting at a distance it was mostly the uniform or the color of their magic that separated Isra and Maxim...

Review What a thrilling conclusion to the first installment of The Steel Prince. It is the end of the Pirate Queen arc and a new one is coming. Its fine - the art is well done and the story is fine, but it was hard go follow the magic system because of the lack of exposition that’s natural for a graphic novel/comic. Fun, but not earth shaking.

I would seriously die for the Maresh family. I'm so glad we are getting Isra's story along with Maxim. The artwork was phenomenal and I'm glad this is a visual story instead of a novel. It really is bringing the world to life. I can't wait for the next one!
