Mystery books have always been one of my favorite genres and this one did not disappoint. I finished this book very quickly because I just had to know what was coming next and how it was going to end. It was a quick read that kept me on the edge of my seat!

I know my daughter loves these but they make me crazy. The Alden children are wholesome, sweet and industrious - gag-inducingly so. Their grandfather is a kind rich indulgent "semi-parent" but often the children (the oldest is either 14 or 15) are left entirely to their own devices. They are very much "those meddling kids" in all the "mysteries." Like many of the books that were written after the original author passed away, this one is awfully paced. It drags out the exposition for five or six I know my daughter loves these but they make me crazy. The Alden children are wholesome, sweet and industrious - gag-inducingly so. It drags out the exposition for five or six chapters, builds very little suspense and then wraps everything far too neatly in the last chapter. In this one particularly there are too many characters acting mysterious at the same time and not enough detail is given to make any of them believable. Now to the positive: they are simple reads and my 8 year old loves them, this one included.

Written for a young audience, it was a perfect read for my kids. They read a little of it to me, and I read the rest to them. It was a good time. It has a suspenseful, mysterious edge that kept them interested in the story.

This book is so wrong. It is a 20 star book. It is the best book ever. You can totally tell that people are suspicious in it.

Another fun adventure for the Boxcar Children. My kids enjoyed discovering where the hidden passages where and wish that we have some in our house.
